Patiala Sightseeing
- Sheesh Mahal
Sheesh Mahal or ‘Palace of Mirrors’, a part of the old Moti Bagh Palace, is a complex full of frescoes, most of which were made under Maharaja Narinder Singh. Sheesh Mahal also has a museum inside it which has paintings and artifacts from Tibet, Kashmir and Punjab. The grand paintings of the Maharajas are also worth appreciation. There is also a myriad collection of some 3200 medals from different countries which is an interesting display. The Sheesh Mahal leaves you awestruck with its beauty in the evenings or at night when its well lit and all sparkling. A lake situated in front of the palace adds to the beauty and the charm of the place. Also, Laxman Jhula on the lake which is like a bridge that takes you inside the Moti Bagh Palace is another attraction among the tourists. - Moti Bagh Palace And Museum
The Moti Bagh Palace and Museum is now the National Institute of Sports. This complex has a large artificial lake (unfortunately drained) crossed by a hanging bridge modelled on Rishikesh’s Lakshman Jhoola. The Sheesh Mahal museum here is an extremely unusual repository of art showcasing the distinctive Patiala school of the early 20th century. It contains paintings done in both Kangra and Rajput style with themes drawn from Hindu, Sikh and Jain folklore. Several are massive works covering entire walls. There are also many sculptures and artefacts dating back to the 9th-10th centuries. There is an interesting collection of thousands of medals as well, collected by, or awarded to, the Maharajas of Patiala. - Quila Mubarak
The Qila Mubarak (1763) is a large complex built over 10 acres. It dominates the walled city, being set in the centre of an old-style bazaar. The complex contains the Qila Androon, an unevenly maintained edifice with a magnificent gateway. Some of the frescoes and mirror-and-gilt work in this part are worth seeing. Qila Mubarak has a magnificent Durbar Hall, a later construction started in 1859. The Hall houses a rare collection of arms and armour, including weaponry such as swords and daggers that belonged to Guru Gobind Singh as well as a sword reputedly owned by Nadir Shah. It also houses a collection of strikingly beautiful, huge 20-foot chandeliers of Belgian glass in various shapes and colours. - The Baradari Gardens
The garden is located in the north of old Patiala city. It has extensive vegetation of rare trees, shrubs and flowers. The place is also dotted with impressive Colonial buildings and has a marble statue of Maharaja Rajindera Singh. The 19th-century Baradari Gardens has some rare trees and a fern house. This is where the locals take their morning and evening walks (as they also do at the Rajindra Tank, a large lake near the Mall).
